DIGITAL IMAGING IN FISHERIES BIOLOGY (DIGIFISH) (8:00 AM)
Digital imaging has become a powerful tool of biological research within the last two decades. In
fisheries, there are numerous applications available for different fields of expertise: On a macroscopic level
possibilities exist of imaging whole populations by echo-sounding or infra-red imaging, or imaging single
specimens of aquatic organisms to assess their morphometry, growth, injuries caused by predators,
colouration and variability of colour patterns on ornamental fish; to document size, quality and composition
of feeds and texture of fish flesh; health, intoxications or dissections of aquatic organisms, etc. Microscopic
applications range from systematics (species determination) through embryology, reproductive physiology
(gamete maturation, quality and viability), genetics (karyotyping and FISH, absolute DNA content, ploidy
level), haematology to anatomy, parasitology, and pathology, with in particular emphasis on histology.
Such a wide range of applications also prerequisites a varying extent of technical skills, precise
calibration, and especially the required standardized methodology to prevent measurement errors and
misinterpretations. To provide a discussion forum to consider such additional variables will also be one of
the goals of this meeting.

Date: September 20 – 23, 2010
